Methodology

The short version: nothing on this site is invented. Every story links the publisher that reported it, and every satellite reading names its instrument.

How a story is filed under a plant

A story is attributed to a plant only when the reporting itself names that plant. When attribution is not certain, we leave it off. One wrong join on a plant page discredits the rest, so we file fewer stories rather than wrong ones.

How summaries are written

Where a summary appears under a headline, it was written from the publisher's own article. Where none appears, the article could not be read and we show the publisher's headline rather than a sentence we invented.

The thermal watch

Satellite readings are NASA FIRMS VIIRS active-fire detections near a plant over the last 48 hours. FRP is fire radiative power in megawatts. Flares are routine safety equipment: a detection is an observation of heat from orbit, not an incident claim. We acknowledge the use of data from NASA FIRMS, part of NASA EOSDIS.

Satellite imagery on plant pages

The frames on each plant's analysis page are Esri World Imagery, drawn from the archive of published basemap releases. Each frame carries the date Esri published that release. The pair shows how a site has changed across years: construction, demolition, tank-farm and unit change. Where an analysis page carries a Sentinel-2 comparison, each scene is labeled with its acquisition date and scene ID.

Market value

Market cap on the directory is the ultimate parent's, taken from its primary listing in the home currency and converted to US dollars at the same day's rate. It refreshes daily. A plant whose owner is not publicly listed shows a blank, and a blank is never a zero.

Ordering

Newest first. Within a day, stories rank by consequence and corroboration.

Licensing

Headlines, links, and article text belong to the publishers named. The clustering, attribution, dateline, ranking, and summaries are ours, CC-BY 4.0, machine-readable at /wire/index.json and /wire/feed.xml. Members also get the full record at /data/wire.json.
